Today Sony announced its financial results for the quarter between October 1 and December 31, 2022, providing an update on PS5 shipments. The company revealed that it shipped 7.1 million PS5 units during the quarter, bringing the total up to 32.1 million. This marks the best quarter ever for Sony’s PlayStation 5 console. The PS4 remains frozen in time at 117 million as of May 2022. Below you can take a look at the presentation slides providing an overview of the “Games & Network Services” segment of Sony’s business, which includes PlayStation and the PlayStation Network.
As you can see, sales increased significantly year-on-year (by 53%) due to the improvement in hardware sales and first-party software sales. Operating income grew by 25% year-on-year due to the increase in first-party game sales, partially offset by growth in costs, including acquisitions. The outlook for the fiscal year ending on March 31 remains unchanged from sales, while it has been revised upward by 7% for operating income due to the impact of foreign exchange rates.
We also get further documentation showing that PlayStation Plus subscribers were at 46.4 million as of December 31, while PlayStation Network had 112 million monthly active users. Lastly, we take a look at Sony’s performance as a whole company, with sales that increased by 13% year-on-year, while operating income decreased by 8%. Just yesterday, we learned that God of War Ragnarok has sold through to customers 11 million units.
