Bad news for those hoping for a PlayStation 5 Pro before moving on to the next console generation – Sony is reportedly focusing on the next PlayStation instead of a mid-generation upgrade. According to Tom Henderson, a reliable source for gaming news, the high demand for the PS5 – with its lack of competition from the Xbox – is making Sony think twice about introducing a hardware refresh.
The PS5 is still relatively new, having only been released three years ago, and is now seeing an increase in stock availability. Despite this, Henderson believes Sony will still release new PS5 models, though they won’t be a true upgrade from the current generation. It’s clear that the PS5 is still powerful enough to handle the most demanding games, even on 4K TVs, and the shift to 8K isn’t likely to happen anytime soon.
With the demand for the PS5 still much higher than the available supply, there isn’t a need for a PS5 Pro model. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One continue to be supported, and the games available haven’t pushed the boundaries of the new hardware, so a Pro model is more wishful thinking than a reality. Sony is still introducing new hardware in this generation. However, with the PSVR2 launching soon, the DualSense Edge is already available, and Project Leonardo, an accessibility-focused controller for the PS5.
The PlayStation 6 is likely to be the platform of choice for upcoming games, and Sony will likely push back its release to the next decade to make way for the PS5 Pro. However, this is highly unlikely, as new consoles sell better than mid-cycle upgrades.
